Directions to the Kerr Drill Cemeteries
|

For many years these cemeteries have been ignored and left for Mother Nature and vandals to slowly destroy. In the spring of 2000,
descendants of these pioneers and concerned citizens individually contacted the City of Dayton and requested help in this cleanup effort. In
January of 2006 Lisa O'Hearn, ICU Executive Director, discovered that the cemeteries had once again been vandalized. Many of the headstones
that were re-erected have been knocked over or damaged.
On February 11, 2006 a meeting was conducted at the Sheet Metal Local Union Hall on Northcutt Place. There were approximately 40 concerned
citizens and descendants in attendance. Plans were made and volunteers skilled in the art of stone masonry erected two stone pillars as
entrance way into the cemetery. The limestone pillars encompass several of the broken tombstones in a puzzled type effect because due to the
damage they could not be repaired. The current plans are to continue yearly clean up maintenance, with hopes of eventually building a rod iron
fence around the small area of land and install a sensory light mechanism to deter vandals.
